Early learning and development is a process that requires a balance of child-initiated and adult-initiated activities. We support learning in a play-based, developmentally-appropriate environment that integrates a variety of activities and aspects in a thematic style throughout the day.
A pre-school child spends not more than four hours at our schools. The children begin their day by assembling in the classroom for the Morning Prayer. They participate in the activities of their groups, learn different concepts, play, create and socialize.
The children in the playgroup and the pre-kindergarten spend three hours in school. They study twelve different themes during the span of an academic year- Fun with Myself, Fun with Animals, Fun in Water, Fun with the Food I Eat, Fun with Nature, Fun in the Community, Fun in the Sky, Fun with Insects, Fun with Sunshine and Raindrops, Fine with Safety, Fun with Things that Go, Celebrations and Festivals, Seasons and some regular and special events which are based on context specific and current happenings.
They learn how to identify and pronounce the English alphabet and to count the numbers up to 9. They learn to recognize colours and to identify different shapes around them like circle, square, triangle, star, heart, oval and rectangle; the primary colours and some basic skills and concepts.
They participate in music time, theme time and other activities. They learn to read big books and to identify the sounds of different musical instruments. They also listen to stories and act them out. They play with puppets and watch and participate in age-appropriate science experiments.
The children are actively encouraged to use the gym, slides, sand pits and tricycles.
The children of kindergarten 1 and 2 spend four hours at school. They follow the same system as the pre-kindergarten but spend more time on design thinking, music, art and craft and drama.
The activities in both these classes are structured into specific time tables.
The children learn through the themes - All about myself, All about Animals, All about the Sand and Sea, All about Food and Fitness, All about Nature, All about Community and All about Sky and Space.
The children start writing the alphabet and numbers which they have learnt to pronounce in the pre-kindergarten classes. By the time the children complete kindergarten 2 at The Pupil Tree; they are able to read and write numbers up to 100 and also add one digit numbers. They will have accrued all the sounds of the alphabet and acquired at least 500 words in English. The students will also be able to read big books by themselves. The child will also be able to write simple sentences in English.
The children also celebrate different festivals and birthdays that occur during the year.
Here's an example of a typical day at The Pupil Tree kindergarten during a week where the theme is "Feelings", a part of the theme, "All About Myself":
